Training
In the rapidly changing dairy farming sector, there is a need for agricultural professionals who can manage and advise dairy farms on the steps that will ensure long term profitability. Our short-term training programs Dairy Management looks into developments, such as globalization, production, sales and public demand for cows to graze outdoors for a better quality of life. The training is provided in Nepal and also the Netherlands, a country that plays a leading role in dairy production.
We offer dairy farm management program to individuals and dairy professionals interested in getting a hands-on experience in dairy farming, dairy technology, milk processing and internships with different dairy farms inside and outside the country. The training will be a combination of livestock and dairy techniques such as milking and breeding technology. We will exchange all of these together through hands-on projects with each. Trainees will learn the dairy farming techniques we use at our resource center through use on their own experiential farming beds and making compost and cultivating micro-organisms themselves.

Train the Trainer Programs
Train the trainer program is a part of our franchise concept.
In 2021 Dairy Training Centre will run 2 new Train- the -Trainer programs on dairy farm management and milk processing. This training is attended for Teachers, trainers, advisors, leaders who are responsible for good practical training in their home country and aspirant trainers of franchise partners of Dairy Training Centre.

DTC Nepal believes in the power of joint learning by sharing sustainable experiences. DTC Nepal facilitates direct linkages between development experts in developing countries and the Netherlands – and provides support to dairy farming projects worldwide with collaboration of DTC Netherlands. Our students, farmers and members will gain real life skills and experiences though such educational and cultural exchange related to dairy farming.
Dairy Farm Tours & Workshops
The program includes a combination between background info, farm tours by host farmers and training questions and evaluation. All trainings and tours include background info on Nepalese/Dutch farming, visits to different farm types, and analysis of how to use the lessons learnt in the own country context. On request we can also organize visits to companies, laboratories, research institutes etc. related to dairy farming.Dairy Farms and Dairy Projects
In the worldwide support to dairy programs the experiences from Dutch dairy farming are combined with international experience on natural livestock farming on sustainable ways to produce quality milk, without chemical residues. This is based on the NLF 5-layered approach, including the use of herbs (ethno-veterinary practices) as well as sustainable breeding strategies.
How can we support?
- DTC Nepal, together with other partners within the DTC Holland network have developed several methodologies to support dairy farmers, including:
- Wheel of Animal Production and Wellbeing – a participatory tool for dairy planning, monitoring and evaluation
- Review lessons learnt in Dutch dairy farming, and see which of those are applicable in the local situations
- Training courses on safe use of herbs and herbal products (Ethno Veterinary Medicine) for farmers and veterinarians
- Contextualize the Natural Livestock Farming 5-layered strategy for sustainable dairy production, and residue free milk to the local conditions
- Organize an NLF exchange & training program, for example to NLF-India, on the safe use of herbs (Ethno Veterinary Practices) for prevention and cure of important cattle diseases, such as mastitis
- Studies on a variety of topics related to sustainable livestock production in a changing context. Special expertise in livestock & climate change, and reduction of antibiotic use.
Internships and Volunteering
Internships offer students and farmers real life opportunities working within the dairy industry. Recognizing this, DTC Nepal has established dairy farming Internship for its students and farmers to share internship opportunities with dairy professionals.
We are also a community-oriented farm and welcome members of our community to help out on the farm. Whether a specific task, general offer to help out when needed or committing to do a weekly chore there is always plenty to do!
Do you like cows? Want to support your local farmers? Want to give back to your community? Then let us know! Please note that there are very few unskilled tasks on the farm. However, we’ll be glad to train you up!
Dairy Farming Exchange
DTC Nepal is organizing exchange and training programs with the Livestock and Dairy Farming network on challenges related to sustainable dairy farming and milk quality. An important focus is on the improvement of milk quality by improving cattle health and reducing the use of antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals.
The exchanges and training include proof of concept of practices, including:
- Good animal management strategies: feeding, water provision, housing, general care and animal treatment, hygiene, grassland management
- Breeding of robust animals well adapted to local conditions through (1) strategic three-way cross breeding programs, or (2) local breeds improvement programs
- Safe and effective use of medicinal plants for prevention and cure of common cattle diseases. Set up local herbal gardens, inventory of medicinal plants in the local area.
- Training on milk quality control on chemical residues
- How to improve farm income through reduced costs and stimulating direct marketing initiatives, for example with local breed products.
- Pilots with these strategies have been done in India, Ethiopia and the Netherlands, showing excellent results and proof of concept. Exchanges to these countries can be organized.
